My mother was a typical Bensonhurst [Brooklyn neighborhood] mother—yelling, carrying on, you know, just says “no” for no reason, you know—that kind of mother. You get punished, you know, and that kind of thing. But my mother got into Scientology, and then out of nowhere my mother was communicating. She was talking to us, which was a very odd thing.
